Creamy Cucumber Salad with Dill


Dress your next cucumber salad with sour cream and dill for a wonderful German side dish. Cold and creamy salad is a great accompaniment to fried dishes and cold platters.

Makes cucumber salad for 4 people.

  • 1 cucumber
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 T. white wine vinegar
  • 4 oz. sour cream
  • 2 tsp. oil
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • Pepper
  • 2 T. chopped dill, or to taste


Peel the cucumber unless it is an English cucumber or other kind which you don't have to peel. Slice the cucumber thin. This is best done with a mandolin or food processor. Place the slices in a colander, salt and toss. Let the slices drain for 20 - 30 minutes.

Mix the dressing ingredients (vinegar through dill) in a separate bowl. Add drained cucumber and stir to coat. Serve chilled.

Cucumber salad variations, Member eberskopf

I grew up on this salad. The key is to get the cucumber juices drained out completely by squeezing them out. The taste will be better than by just letting them drain naturally. Depending on your tastes, a little white wine in addition to the white wine vinegar adds a little more zing. Fresh dill is an absolute must. The flavor really pops that way. A little Maggi seasoning instead of salt is even better. Don't forger the pepper. I prefer red pepper flakes but those with milder pallets will think that a bit much. Make sure the vinegar, dill, wine, (if used), and sour cream, are very well blended. After combining everything, chill for about an hour. This is one refreshing dish that goes well with any food combination from chicken, to seafood, or the traditional beef dishes. This one is always the first to disappear at a pot luck.
