A new twist on an old favorite, hamburgers. These patties aren’t served on a bun, but they do go well with German potato salad.

Traditionally made with day-old white bread, you can substitute 1/2 cup oatmeal microwaved 2 minutes in 1/2 cup milk, for added nutrition.

Makes 4-6 patties, depending on their size.

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 day-old roll (about 2 oz.)
  • 1 medium cooking apple, such as Gala or Granny Smith
  • 1/2 c. chopped onion, about 1/2 medium onion
  • 1 lb. ground meat, usually 1/2 pork and 1/2 beef
  • 1 large egg or 2 small eggs
  • 1/2 c. raisins
  • 1 T. chopped, fresh marjoram or 1 tsp. dried marjoram
  • Curry Sauce

Preparation:

Soak the roll in water and squeeze dry. Peel and grate the apple and chop the onion fine. Add the apple and onion to the ground meat, egg, torn-up roll, marjoram and raisins in a bowl. Mix well.

Form 8 patties (Frikadellen) and fry in hot fat on both sides. Serve hot with cold curry sauce.
