Simple Recipes for Great-Tasting German Food
By Jennifer McGavin, About.com Guide
While traditional German food, like Apple Strudel and Sauerbraten, are delicious, they can take hours or even days to make. Sometimes the instructions are daunting, too, such as when they ask that you leave a live carp in your bathtub for several days before cooking. But there are easy recipes with traditional German flavor. Here are my favorites.
Easy Cakes and Desserts
Cakes and desserts made from scratch are a little more time consuming than packaged mixes, but they taste so much better that they are worth the effort. The first two listed can be frozen and reheated in the microwave.
- Chocolate Chip Pound Cake - Omas Schokostückle Kuchen
- Yeasted Butter Cake - Butterkuchen
- Milchreis - Rice Pudding
Easy Main Dishes

Everyone has some evenings where dinner has to be on the table quickly. The first two recipes will do just that, but give you ingredients common to Germany. The two roasts take a couple hours to cook, but they are so easy to prepare that you will want to try them on your days off. And the fish recipe is an unusual but tasty way to bake a Friday dinner.
- Mustard Pork Chops
- Tarragon Ragout - Geschnetzeltes
- German Pork Roast
