Try this sweet spread on your German bread instead of jam or nougat cream. Fun to eat and fun to make, it freezes well, too. Just form it into a roll like cookie dough for a quick pick-me up snack.

Makes 1 cup of breakfast spread.

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 0 minute

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 T. hot water
  • 2/3 c. chopped dates or date sugar
  • 1/3 c. raw, whole almonds
  • 2 T. cocoa nibs, toasted or 2 T. Dutch cocoa powder
  • 2 T. raw sunflower seeds
  • 1 T. butter (optional)

Preparation:

Pour the hot water over the dates and let sit for 15 minutes to soften. Place all ingredients in a food processor and mix until desired consistency, scraping down the sides often. Add a little more water, if necessary. It will be easier to get a smooth spread if you use date sugar which is, however, hard to find.

Melt butter and mix into spread, if desired.

Spread on bread. Refrigerate or freeze leftovers.
