The Advent season (four weeks before Christmas) can be a hectic, but wonderful time. Spicy smells in the streets, goodies you don't see the rest of the year, and wonderful Advent wreaths and decorations. The Erzgebirge ornaments and nutcrackers all come out of the boxes stored in the attic, the house is made ready for visitors and when they come, time slows down for just a little while, so everyone can enjoy each others' company.
Of course, to get to those afternoons, many a German Hausfrau spends days baking many dozens of cookies. Christmas cookies made in Germany are generally dry, easy to store cookies which can be kept throughout the Advent season. The recipes make several dozen (usually about six), small cookies so everyone can taste everything. Some of them can be a bit fiddly, while others are simple to make and bake.
