Anyone who has had a German mother will sympathize with this author, blogger and baker. Sandra and Gesine Bullock's mom was straight from the Old World and spread her culture to them through food. Generalizing here, but Germans are torn between the healthy and the traditional foods and Frau Bullock was no exception. She cooked macrobiotically, with typical German pancakes and cookies thrown in on the weekends.
Sandra went on to be a movie star, while Gesine studied law and ran a film company for her sister. Then, she decided to become a master baker and opened shop in Montpelier, Vermont. I heard about her a couple days ago on an NPR segment (A Baker's Escape From Hollywood), where she was hawking her new book "Confections of a Master Baker". Her story intrigued me about how her mother passed on many of her special, German recipes which have made a deep impact on her life.
That sounds like so many of us talking in our forum, not knowing how to write the names of things Oma or Mutti cooked everyday, but wanting, "sehnen" for the food as an adult. Many people didn't listen to Oma until it was too late, but Gesine was lucky, she did. Her blog has many of her mother's recipes and it's a real treat to read; probably her book, as well (I haven't yet, but soon). The blog is a great addition to our German recipe files and I'm going to guess that they have have all been well tested, too.
