Pancakes for Dinner

Saturday September 20, 2008
Pancakes with Lemon and Sugar

My girlfriend stood at the stove with two frying pans going. Her children and husband sat eagerly around the table. She produced two pancakes and flipped them onto an outstretched plate. The happy recipient poured lemon juice, sprinkled sugar and started rolling.

German dinners have traditionally consisted of filling potato or flour-based recipes. They often came before the sausage and bread to cut down on sausage consumption, since it was the most expensive part of the meal. That's why you find Spaetzle Casseroles, Dampfnudeln, and dishes as simple as pancakes in the evening.

These pancakes can also be served as dessert or snacks. They are so simple that older kids can make them themselves, too. That's a good, early foray into the kitchen.

Tim’s family calls these Grandma Pancakes, and any meal that features them is something to get excited about. We even made them on a grill on the top of a river bluff once.

I love breakfast for dinner. Yum.
